WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

South Mississippi paused on Friday to remember the day many say changed the Coast forever. It was the worst natural disaster in U.S. history created by a powerful hurricane named Katrina.

On Aug. 29, 2005, Laura Bane lost her mother, father and two younger brothers.

"The water went completely over the house," Bane remembered.

She, her son and a friend were among those who turned out for a somber 9th anniversary memorial service to remember the 55 people in Hancock County who lost their lives during our nation's worst natural disaster.

A monument with the names of those who perished in Waveland was unveiled during the service, and then the names were read aloud.

For Bane, hearing those names makes coping with the loss of her family nine years later just a little bit easier.

"It hurts so bad, but I want people to know who they are or who they were and what happened," explained Bane.

Following the service, Bane headed to the place where her family is buried for a private grave side memorial.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about them," said Bane.

She said she now longs for the days when she could pick up a phone and call her mother and father, or play games with her 13-year-old and 15-year-old brothers who both had special needs.

"Love and cherish your family, because they could be gone at anytime," Bane said.

She is now an advocate for emergency operation centers across the Coast, warning residents to always evacuate when those orders are given.
