BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The man who was killed by an alleged drunk driver in a stolen van on Friday morning has been identified. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said 26-year-old Christopher Curry, of Jackson, was pronounced dead at the Ocean Springs Hospital shortly before 7:15 a.m.

Biloxi Police say David Lee Shepperd was drunk Friday morning when he stole a van and ran over Curry. It happened around 6:18 a.m. at the Porter Avenue service drive.

The van belonged to the University of Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Lab. Researchers from the lab were taking water samples at the Lighthouse Pier when Shepperd allegedly jumped in their van and tried to drive away.

When officers arrived, they found a bench that appeared to have been run over with Curry lying on top of the rubble. Officers said it appeared Curry had been run over as well.

The van was left sitting empty on the sand beach, but witnesses helped police identify the driver as Shepperd, 36, of Franktown, CO.

Shepperd was charged with DUI causing death and taking away of a motor vehicle. His total bond was set at $1,025,000.
