HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A family is in shambles after a fatal wreck in Gulfport on Thursday claimed the life of a wife and sent her husband on the run from law enforcement.

Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said Joshua Emmanuel Ladner, 27, was towing his wife's 1969 Chevrolet C10 pickup truck behind his truck with a chain when a sharp curved caused her truck to flip.

Brisolara said Joshua's wife, 34-year-old Melissa Jane Ladner, was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3 p.m.

Authorities said this all happened on Wolf River Road, just south of the intersection of Big Creek Road.

Officials said when deputies arrived at the scene, Joshua was standing over Melissa's body, but jumped in his vehicle and drove away when he saw law enforcement.

That is when Joshua allegedly led deputies on a high speed chase down County Farm Road before he turned west onto Highway 53, drove into a field on Menonite Road and left his truck before running in the woods.

Officials tell WLOX they called off the man hunt for Joshua after about four hours of searching because they do not believe he poses a threat to the community. Brisolara said warrants for felony fleeing and leaving the scene of a traffic accident causing death have been issued for Joshua, and deputies are actively searching for him.

Two people ran from the burning home in the Saucier community overnight. First responders say the duo was inside the burning building long enough to breathe in too much smoke. AMR rushed both people to the hospital so they could be treated for smoke inhalation. By the time fire trucks arrived, flames and smoke could be seen pouring out of the entire home. The trailer was a total loss. Sullivan says the home did not have working smoke alarms.
