About a month and a half ago the U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that the USS Jackson would be commissioned in Gulfport. Gulfport Chief Administrative Officer Dr. John Kelly said this is good for Gulfport.
"It's a big deal because it brings people from literally all over the country. Just imagine the entire crew having to come and all of the diplomats out of D.C., so it's an exciting project for the coast of Mississippi and we're excited about it," said Kelly.
It will take about $275,000 to put on this week long event next summer. Gulfport is raising money by selling commemorative coins and T-shirts at city hall. The city is also asking businesses for donations.
