CAMBRIDGE, MA (RNN/CNN) - Peter Theo Curtis, the American journalist freed by militants in Syria, thanked everyone who helped him get back to the U.S. but asked for time to be alone with his family.

"In the future, I promise I will respond to your emails," he told the reporters outside his home. "I will be present, and I will help you do your jobs."

With a newly clean-shaven face, Curtis said he was "grateful" to everyone for their interest in his story.

"At the same time, I have to bond with my mother and my family now," he said. "I cannot give you an interview."

Curtis got his freedom Sunday and was greeted by his mother in Boston on Tuesday. His release came days after Islamic State militants executed another journalist, James Foley. The execution was meant as a warning to the U.S. government, to stop its airstrikes against their fighters in Iraq.

Curtis was held for 22 months by fighters believed connected with the al-Qaida affiliated al-Nusra front. The government of Qatar helped win his release but said it did not pay a ransom.

He also thanked the many people who have greeted him since his return.

"Total strangers have been coming up to me and telling me, 'Welcome home,'" Curtis said.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
