WEST POINT, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A suspect has been arrested in an assault, allegedly over race, that seriously injured a West Point man this weekend.

According to WTVA, 22-year-old Courtez McMillian, of Okolona, is behind bars charged with aggravated assault in the severe beating of 32-year-old Ralph Weems.

Weems, a Marine and Iraq war veteran, and another man were attacked in a Huddle House restaurant parking lot by up to 20 people.

Police say that McMillian and others may have assaulted the victim because he was white.

Weems says he was warned by African American patrons at the restaurant, that the place was not safe for white people, because of anger over the police shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

WTVA reports that investigators expect to make other arrests. A grand jury will determine whether the beating was a hate crime.
