LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - USM Gulf Park wants students to make a smooth transition to college and get them more involved in campus life. The campus is hosting a series of events to help students feel welcome. Assignment Education Reporter Trang Pham-Bui attended the first day of Welcome Week.
This is Welcome Week, a tradition at USM Gulf Park that takes place during the first full week of classes.
There is a long list activities planned throughout the week to help students get acquainted with the people, sites, and resources offered at the Long Beach campus. The events include lunch-and-learn sessions, open house visits, campus tours, beautification projects and organization fairs.
"You come in and you're nervous. You don't know what to expect. And as student leaders, we're able to talk to them and make them feel comfortable and let them know what's going on on campus and make them feel like they're home," said Sarah Pennington a student leader with the Southern Connection Leadership team.
"The faces, it's so important not just for staff and faculty, but also to meet other students that are just like them. This campus is thriving with traditional and non-traditional students and they're able to relate to one another and meet one another in an environment that's comfortable for them," said Christy Elias the Student Affairs Interim Director.
All week, students can earn points with each activity they participate in and they can be eligible for prizes from t-shirts and free parking to a full technology package.
