Biloxi Police urge residents to be aware of possible phone scams

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Biloxi Police Department reports the number of suspicious phone calls to residents have increased in recent days.

The phone calls could be part of a variety of phone scams. Callers may claim to represent the IRS, a debt collector, or a power company seeking payment for an unpaid bill. The caller may say you have won the lottery or some other prize. They may also say they are representing a relative in a different state who is in jail and needs bail money.

Jackie Rhodes, spokesperson for the Biloxi Police Department, says they have also received complaints about door-to-door sales people, pressuring residents to purchase home alarm systems.

Rhodes urges people to be cautious in dealing with phone and door-to-door solicitation.
