GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Henderson tells WLOX News that crews with CenterPoint Energy managed to cap a natural gas leak near Klein Road and Community Road just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The leak started around 3 p.m. on Saturday after a 2006 GMC Canyon pickup truck plowed into an above ground regulator station.
Authorities were forced to close off nearby streets and ask residents to leave their homes as workers tried to halt the leak.
Officials with the energy company tell us natural gas is lighter than air, which means it goes up into the atmosphere and dissipates quickly and should not impact air quality. However, as a precaution, authorities have recommended that anyone returning home should open their doors and windows to ventilate their homes for a little while
Energy company officials said they do not expect anyone will lose natural gas service as a result of this accident, and they expect permanent repairs to begin next week.
Natural gas is used for water heating and cooking.
