BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - We should soon know more about the area of disturbed weather that could impact South Mississippi in the coming weeks. The Hurricane Hunters will be flying into Invest 96L today.
The WC-130J aircrews were being deployed Thursday morning from their forward operating location at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. They'll conduct a low-level investigation for a tropical disturbance in the area of the Atlantic Ocean north of Guyana, South America.
The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron crews will sample the wind field around the suspected low pressure center while looking for a circulation pattern at very low altitudes. This type of mission is referred to as a low-level invest.
The data will be sent to National Hurricane Center forecasters to improve their forecast models.
