BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's main Republican challenger, Congressman Bill Cassidy, was among the first congressional candidates to sign up for Louisiana's Nov. 4 election.

The three-day qualifying period opens Wednesday and runs through Friday. Contenders vying for any office from constable to a seat in Congress have to put up qualifying fees and sign paperwork.

At the top of the ballot are the congressional races, including Landrieu's bid to hold onto her seat for a fourth term.

The Democratic incumbent planned to sign up for her re-election bid Wednesday at the Secretary of State's Office.

Cassidy described his effort to oust Landrieu as crucial to returning the U.S. Senate to GOP control. He repeatedly linked Landrieu to President Barack Obama, who is highly unpopular in Louisiana.
