Suspect in drive-by shooting faces additional charge after OPP fight

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A suspect in a deadly drive-by shooting in the Lower Ninth Ward got into a fight with another inmate on his first day inside Orleans Parish Prison.

Court records show Blair Taylor, one of two men police say opened fire Aug. 10 on a crowd of mostly women and children, was attacked by another inmate last Thursday - hours after being booked on murder charges.

A new arrest report shows Taylor was re-booked with an additional charge of aggravated battery after deputies said he grabbed a wooden cane from a disabled inmate and swung it at his attacker's head while that man was restrained by guards who broke up the fight.

Our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune report that Taylor fought with Lawrence Wells, 30, the alleged aggressor in the altercation. Wells was jailed Aug. 12 in connection with domestic battery.

Taylor was jailed on two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting that killed two and wounded five - including two toddler boys - outside a home in the 5400 block of Burgundy Street. A second suspect, Joseph Nelson III, 23, was booked with the same charges Monday.

The shooting killed 16-year-old Jasmine Anderson and Terrence McBride, 33, whom police have said was the intended target.

Deputy Steve Shafer wrote that Wells made first contact in the fight. But while Wells was being restrained, the report says Taylor grabbed a wooden cane and swung it at Wells' head. Wells blocked the cane with his forearm.

The report said the cane, described as "a tree branch about an inch in diameter," was swung with such force that it broke over Wells' forearm.

Two others also were arrested in connection to the drive-by shooting.

Jeffery Rivers, 25, was booked with two counts of principal to first-degree murder and five counts of principal to attempted first-degree murder. Investigators said Rivers supplied a stolen getaway car and at least one of the guns used in the attack.

Police also said Ashley Shorts, 25, faces charges of obstruction of justice for allegedly harboring one of the shooting suspects.
