OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The Ocean Springs Board of Alderman unanimously approved the operation of ice cream trucks in the city Tuesday night.
However, the approval is pending; the Ocean Springs Police Department must first review and approve the ordinance before it will go into effect.
The board said the police department never got a chance to review the ordinance. Since the police are the ones who enforce it, the aldermen want to ensure the police department agrees with it.
The ordinance, as currently drafted, would only give permits to ice cream trucks selling pre-packaged treats. To avoid traffic delays, the trucks will only be able to stop for ten minutes. The city's noise ordinance will also apply, which means the music from the truck can not be heard any further than 100 feet away from the truck.
If police officers do not approve of the ordinance as it is currently written, the board will have to redraft it.
