MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Moss Point's Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night appointed a new police chief to help sweep drugs and crime off the street. Sergeant Calvin Hutchins from the Pascagoula Police Department will replace Keith Davis, who resigned after not seeing eye to eye with Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield.

"It's four to three in favor of Mr. Hutchins," Mayor Billy Broomfield said.

Cheers and applause echoed throughout the board room Tuesday after the Moss Point native was named the new chief of police.

"I think it is very important that he is from here and he has the citizens of Moss Point in his heart, as well as in his head," Moss Point resident Pamela Dubose said.

Some of his supporters even brought a large colorful sign to the meeting to let the board know who they felt was the best choice.

"He has over 20 years experience. So dealing with that and bringing that to the City of Moss Point will help, because they do need a lot of help here," resident Calvin Armstrong said.

Hutchins beat out Art McClung for the job, who was serving as the interim chief. Alderman Wayne Lennep said the vote showed it was simply time for a change.

"I just felt like the city needed a new start and a new, clean slate for the leadership for our police department."

Hutchins joined the Moss Point Police Department in the early 1990s and later transferred to Pascagoula where he now works as a sergeant in charge of the criminal Investigation division. He plans to use that experience to improve the police team in Moss Point.

"My endeavor is to do what I said I would do and that is to get out here and serve and put professional officers out on the street. My number one goal is going back to basic police work. Let's get back out into the community and let the community know who the police are," Hutchins said.

Hutchins admits this job will be a challenge, but said he'll do his best to restore the public's trust and make Moss Point a safer place to live, work and play.

"We want to see if we can get into the neighborhood and detour as much crime as we can. As you can see, if you get the community behind you, you have more eyes out there to assist you."

WLOX called Art McClung for a comment about the decision, but did not receive a response.
