Molotov cocktail thrown into Toledo woman's home

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are working to find out who threw a Molotov cocktail through a woman's window in central Toledo.

The victim says she's been living in the neighborhood her entire life. Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, police say someone threw a Molotov cocktail into the window of her home on the 900 block of Belmont. The victim says she was able to put the flame out, but a neighbor says she is just tired of all the crime in the area.

"She's fighting medical issues and she's more concerned about that, so for somebody to be just so inhumane, it's concerning," said neighbor Bridget Hanson.

Hanson has lived on the block since 1997.

"Anyone can be attacked at any moment," she said. "This woman hasn't done anything to anybody."

The victim didn't want to be identified, but was emotional as she explained how the cocktail was thrown threw her back window, waking her. She says she was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

"Basically there's no morals anymore, there's no value on life," said Hanson. "A human life means nothing."

Hanson says the neighborhood has been plagued with crime, including shootings and robberies. She says the solution is to reach out to the youth.

"We got to let them know that they don't just want to be a T-shirt that people are wearing around that say RIP or RIH, and it's up to us to try to communicate to our youth how important it is for their survival," she said.

She says she thinks if the community comes together in that effort, crime will decrease.

As for the woman who received the Molotov cocktail, she says she's planning to move out of the neighborhood.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
