BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

The verdict is in on the land dispute between the Murphy family, the State of Mississippi, and the city of Bay St. Louis.

It took a Hancock County jury about four hours to exonerate the city of Bay St. Louis. Instead, jurors placed the blame on the Secretary of State's Office and awarded the Murphy family more than $644,000 for their damages.

The Murphy family sued the State and city claiming the city and state took part of their beach front property to build a seawall and harbor marina. The Murphy family operated a restaurant on the land before Hurricane Katrina.

The Secretary of States office contended during the six day trial it owned all beach front property from the seawall to the mean high tide line. The state has appealed similar court decisions in the past.
