A grand jury has charged two teenagers with second-degree murder for allegedly killing a cab driver inside his vehicle in Gretna.
Jonah Brown, 17, of Westwego, and Ivory Warren, 18, of Algiers are accused of fatally shooting Blake Helmer.
Helmer, 55, was killed in April just two blocks from the cab company headquarters off Monroe Street in Gretna. He had driven for Glenn's Cabs for 22 years.
Helmer had picked up three teenagers when he realized he was in trouble. He keyed his two-way radio and the cab dispatcher heard the fatal gunshots.
She called police and the three teenagers were caught by dawn with the help of a SWAT team.
Brown and Warren were originally charged with first-degree murder. The third teenager, Tavon Corley was booked as an accessory for helping the two murder suspects hide.
Family and friends remember Helmer as being remembered as a kind person, who often gave those less fortunate free rides.
If convicted, Brown and Warren face a mandatory life-sentence in prison.
