North Side students benefit from credit union donations and collaboration with The Education Partnership

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

WHAT: Riverset Credit Union is supporting the students of Pittsburgh King PreK-8 School, part of the Pittsburgh Public School District, with a school supply drive. Many students go without the most basic of school supplies due to poverty, unstable living situations, or chronic parental unemployment.  Members, employees and Board of Directors of Riverset Credit Union have joined together and in collaboration with The Education Partnership, to purchase provisions for students who may not have simple necessities such as backpacks, crayons, pens, pencils, notebooks and paper, along with glue or glue sticks.

WHO: Riverset Credit Union members and employees collected the provisions during the month of July and will be donating them to Pittsburgh King PreK-8.

WHY: The U.S. Census Bureau reported in the 2010 census report that 22.5 percent of Pittsburgh residents lived below the federal poverty level and 5.7 percent of adults were unemployed. Help highlight the support the needy students of Pittsburgh King PreK-8 are receiving through the generosity and partnership with Riverset Credit Union. The Pittsburgh King PreK-8 School was nominated by members of Riverset Credit Union and randomly selected to receive the donation.

Riverset Credit Union:  On March 20, 1934, the credit union was officially created by the Pittsburgh Board of Education as the Pittsburgh Teachers Credit Union. At that time, services were only available to those employed by the Pittsburgh Public School System.

Originally chartered as a single employer group (SEG), as the Pittsburgh Teachers Credit Union, the organization migrated to a multi-SEG credit union through a merger with the McKeesport Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union in 2005. It was in 2007 that the Pittsburgh Teachers Credit Union secured approval to serve defined "underserved community areas" in the South Side and surrounding areas of Pittsburgh as a result of a merger with Duke Federal Credit Union. The name was officially changed to Riverset Credit Union during 2008 to reflect the growing membership and service area. In 2009 the organization received approval to operate in Allegheny, Beaver and Butler counties. Riverset's mission is to provide sound, innovative and efficient banking services to its current and future members.

Pittsburgh King PreK-8 School: At the Pittsburgh King PreK-8 School, students are provided with differentiated learning that addresses their individual academic needs. As a Title I school, Pittsburgh King benefits from additional resources that support students in the areas of reading and math. The motto for the students is "Learn More, Do More and Become More".

The Education Partnership's approach to addressing educational inequities is pragmatic and results-driven, as best exemplified by the organization's core program– providing school and classroom supplies at no charge to schools where at least 70% of the student body qualifies for the National School Lunch Program.
