There are many things to love about the city of Ocean Springs, including its quaint charm and robust downtown. But every once in a while something happens that leaves us scratching our heads. That occurred recently, when the lights were shut down at city parks, including one that plays host to recreational soccer.
City officials say they can't afford to leave them on at night, and suggested people who use the parks pay for the light bill. Really, the city can't afford a few hundred dollars a month to run the lights? For a city that advocates fitness and wellness, that is astounding. Asking residents to come up with even more money for the parks they already pay for is not acceptable.
Fortunately, three local businesses stepped up and offered to pay. Kudos to them, but that's just a Band-Aid approach. City leaders need to sit down, set priorities and come up with a plan to make sure the parks are there to be enjoyed, even at night. Anything less is a disservice to the citizens.
