Mississippi resident dies from West Nile

The Mississippi Department of Health has confirmed a Yazoo County resident has died from the West Nile virus. It is the first human death of virus for 2014.

So far this year the West Nile Virus has been reported in 6 Mississippi counties. In 2013, Mississippi had 45 West Nile cases that resulted in 5 deaths.

The Mississippi Department of Health is also reporting one new case of the Chickungunya Virus in a Mississippi resident who recently returned from the Dominican Republic. This makes a total of six cases for the state.

The MSDH encourages residents to protect themselves and the environment around them from Mosquito-borne illnesses by using the following precautions:

  • Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET while you are outdoors.
  • Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
  • Travelers to the Caribbean should take precautions against mosquito exposure.
