(RNN) - Just in case the theater and TV won't cut it for Tuesday night entertainment, the most explosive meteor shower of the year is performing a ballet with the brightest full moon of the year.

The annual Perseid meteor shower, which lasts for several days, is visible after dark and is expected to peak early Wednesday a few hours before daybreak.

The meteor shower occurs every year in August when debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle burns up in the earth's atmosphere, according to NASA. The celestial event's name derives from large particles that emerge from the direction of the Perseus constellation.

NASA is hosting a live chat, a map of visibility around the world and streaming video of the event above the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.

Meteors are visible in most parts of the world, but most especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

Of course, they have to compete with the supermoon - 14 percent closer and 30 times brighter than other full moons. However, since the moon is phasing out, gazers should still be able to enjoy the show from the Perseid shower.
