GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Witnesses heard an explosion, then saw a fireball engulf an 18 wheeler and a car. That early evening collision and fire shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Highway 49.
As nightfall set in, and rain began to fall, clean up crews worked to remove the charred vehicles and repair the roadway. The truck was badly burned. And the center median was charred as well.
A statement from Gulfport police said around 5:30pm, a Lincoln Towncar tried to merge onto I-10 when it struck the side of an 18 wheeler. The impact area was near the gas tank area. That caused the fiery explosion. The car was driven by a female adult and had a small child inside. Neither person was seriously injured, though they went to the hospital as a precaution.
Police spent most of Monday night directing traffic away from the scene.
If you can, avoid the I-10/Highway 49 area.
