PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A parking lot paving project should be finished by the start of Pascagoula's busy festival season.
Pascagoula's city council approved a plan to pave the Krebs Avenue public parking lot adjacent to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The council agreed to expedite paving and striping the lot, so the work doesn't interfere with upcoming festivals.
A news release from the city of Pascagoula says although the lot is currently safe for vehicles and pedestrians to use, the current paving is not smooth and there is no striping.
City Engineer Jaci Turner said, "With the Goula Cruise, Bachtoberfest, and Zonta all on the immediate horizon, we needed to make improvements to the Krebs lot to make it as safe as possible as soon as possible," she said.
She noted, "This lot serves many downtown businesses, and is expected to see an increase in use in the next few weeks, so we have moved it to the top of our priority list."
Pascagoula is currently planning two paving efforts, with the first tentatively scheduled to take place starting August 21. The western 2/3 of the parking lot will close from the evening of Wednesday, August 20, and will re-open Monday, August 25. The eastern 1/3 of the lot will be closed for paving the following week from the evening of Thursday, August 28, and will re-open Monday, September 1.
City employees will be reaching out to business owners who are served by this lot to address any and all concerns.
Other nearby public lots are located on Magnolia Street adjacent to city hall and on Canty Street behind Cumbest, Cumbest, Hunter and McCormick.
