After Further Review: New 53-man roster projection

One preseason game was enough to put one player and bump another off. Other players are getting closer to a spot...

But for now, here is my new 53-man roster projection.

Quarterbacks (2)

Drew Brees

Ryan Griffin

After Friday, there is no way Ryan Griffin gets cut. He may not win the backup quarterback job, but if he doesn't he will still be on the team as the third quarterback. The ideal situation is to keep two. And after Griffin's play Friday, I can't see how anyone can say Luke McCown is in the lead. I don't think McCown was terrible Friday, though his interception was bad, but I don't think the coaching staff can ignore Griffin's growth. To me, it's an easy decision at this point. Griffin is in. McCown is out.

Wide Receivers (6)

Marques Colston

Kenny Stills

Brandin Cooks

Nick Toon

Robert Meachem

Joe Morgan

I'm sticking with my original six, mainly because no one stepped up to move the bottom two down. Andy Tanner was out, Seantavious Jones didn't make any impact and Brandon Coleman seems to be back to his inconsistent ways.

Running Backs (4)

Pierre Thomas

Travaris Cadet

Mark Ingram

Khiry Robinson

This group as a whole looks more confident this season compared to others. Each one has a different characteristic, but each one can catch the ball out of the backfield. There is a clear cut distance between the fourth and fifth-best running back in camp. Right now, Derrick Strozier looks like a practice squad candidate.

Fullback (1)

Erik Lorig

This has now become a tough one to call. Lorig has been out for awhile, the team has signed Greg Jones while Austin Johnson has gotten all the reps. I'm sticking with Lorig as long as his injury isn't serious, though we have no idea of its severity.

Offensive Tackles (3)

Zach Strief

Terron Armstead

Bryce Harris

Armstead and Strief are clearly locks. Harris has been inconsistent in pass blocking but I have not seen anyone yet that can upstage him for a spot.

Offensive Guards (3)

Jahri Evans

Ben Grubbs

Senio Kelemete

Kelemete has gotten the majority of the first-team reps with Grubbs out. He's also played some center as well. That versatility gets him on the roster.

Centers (2)

Tim Lelito

Jonathan Goodwin

Both are listed as the #1 center. We won't know who the starter is for a while. But we do know that both Goodwin and Lelito will be on the roster.

Tight Ends (3)

Jimmy Graham

Ben Watson

Josh Hill

Josh Hill flashed some open field speed and has always been able to provide versatility with his blocking.

Defensive Line (6)

Cam Jordan

Akiem Hicks

Broderick Bunkley

Tyrunn Walker

John Jenkins

Glenn Foster

My change comes here as Glenn Foster did it again on Friday. He seems to thrive in preseason and bumps Brandon Deaderick for the roster spot.

Outside Linebackers (5)

Junior Galette

Keyunta Dawson

Victor Butler

Khairi Fortt

Parys Haralson

The Victor Butler injury is starting to concern me, but thus far he is on the roster. The player to watch in this group is Ronald Powell. He had some penalties Friday, but he was aggressive all night. I haven't put him on the roster yet, but he is close.

Inside Linebackers (5)

Curtis Lofton

David Hawthorne

Kevin Reddick

Kyle Knox

Ramon Humber

Cornerbacks (5)

Patrick Robinson

Keenan Lewis

Corey White

Champ Bailey

Stanley Jean-Baptiste

Patrick Robinson is now rightly listed as the team's number one cornerback on the unofficial depth chart. Stanley Jean-Baptiste had a rough opening game, but I think this group stays the same.

Safety (5)

Kenny Vaccaro

Jairus Byrd

Rafael Bush

Vinnie Sunseri

Marcus Ball

Pierre Warren is inching closer and closer and if he makes it on he won't replace anyone from the safety group. It will be at another position.

Thomas Morstead- P

Shayne Graham-K

Justin Drescher- LS

Morstead and Drescher are locks. Missed extra points are never good, but I still have Graham in the lead in the kicker competition.
