Men accused of assaulting family now in police custody

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The two men accused of attacking a family and leaving one man blind in his right eye are now behind bars. Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said Timothy George Oliver, 25, and Joshua Lynn Harris, 25, are charged with aggravated assault.

Officials said Oliver turned himself in to police on Friday. Harris surrendered to police on 34th Street on Saturday.

Papania said Oliver and Harris forced their way into Mary Smith's home at Bayou View Apartments and assaulted her fiancé and 15-year-old son. Authorities say it all started with an argument between Smith's fiancé and the two suspects.

According to Smith, her fiancé and son both had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for broken noses. Her fiancé also had to have surgery on his right eye, and doctors believe he will never regain sight in that eye.

Papania said Oliver and Harris are being held at the Harrison County Jail on $150,000 bonds.

    The Long Beach Police Department is looking for suspects who attempted to break into more than a dozen vehicles. Long Beach police say in the early morning hours of Thursday burglars walked away with a variety of stolen items including guns and cell phones.
