Golden Eagles confident at football media day

Posted: Updated:

Confidence is key and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles have plenty of it.

Today at USM's media day, the team was asked a range of questions from whether the team can reach a bowl game this season, to what a win against Mississippi State would mean to the program.

"I don't look at it like that. I really don't," said head coach Todd Monken. "Is it a big game? Yes, but sustained winning really is the staple of this program."

"I know that people talk about going over to Alabama and beating Bear [Bryant] and all that, but people talk more often about over the last 80 years the 20th winningest program in all of college football, 18 straight winning seasons, 14 straight bowl games. The mark of a great program is consistently winning."

Senior defensive lineman Adam Williams, said he's ready to prove doubters wrong.

"I'm ready to show [Mississippi State] that Southern Miss, we're a good team. We just lost our confidence at one period and now it's building back up. So, we're ready."

Team leader and senior wide receiver Markese Triplett, believes his teammates have a bright future.

"Yeah, we're going to make a bowl game this year."

When asked what gives him that assurance Triplett said "just the way we work. That's just the confidence we have. Just the chemistry we have. The bond that we have. I feel like we're going to put it together and get a lot of wins."

Fifth-year senior linebacker Alan Howze, believed his fellow upperclassmen can reach their goals.

"Since the win at UAB, and working in the Winter workouts, I always thought as far as that for me, that would probably be just the biggest thing. Being a part of the senior class that brought Southern Miss back up to the top."

The Golden Eagles face the Bulldogs August 30, in Starkville.

Kick-off is set for 6:30 and can be seen on the SEC Network.
