GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport woman is pleading for help trying to catch two men she said went into her Bayou View apartment and attacked her family.
"Every night it's like I have nightmares and I think, 'When is this going to end? When is this going to end?'" Mary Smith said.
Smith said it all began Saturday evening when she was sitting on the porch with her fiance. She said several people outside were being loud and disrespectful when her fiance asked them to stop.
"He said, 'Look, dudes, can y'all cool down on the cussing? You know, stop cussing, degrading women.' And that's when both of them was fussing at him," Smith said.
Smith and her fiance went inside. When they came back outside minutes later, she said two men came up the stairs and pushed their way inside.
"They forced their way in," Smith's fiance said. "Knocked the coffee out of my hand, knocked my cigarette down, and when they hit me with the back of the gun, I went down. One was beating me in the face, the other was kicking me in my side and back."
"Then my son came up from our bedroom," Smith said, "pulled that one off of him and he came around and hit him on his nose. And that's when I pushed him like this and he was coming at me."
What happened that evening has forever changed Smith's fiance's life.
"I'm blind in this eye for the rest of my life," he said. "I'm trying not to walk into stuff, can't see out my right side. It's kind of scary right now, and I can't drive no more."
He was rushed to the hospital, doctors performed surgery on his eye. Doctors said he will have to have another surgery, but they do not believe he will ever get his sight back in his right eye.
"I just pray they go ahead and arrest them and I get a phone call saying, 'Hey, we got them.' And that's when I can just be at ease and sit down and go ahhhh," Smith said.
