Brazilian woman finds long-lost mother; discovers she's married to half-brother

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL (RNN) – A Brazilian woman made a shocking discovery while looking for her long-lost mother.

The woman, 39-year-old Adriana, made a plea on a Brazilian radio station in hopes to find her birth-mother and other relatives. All Adriana knew was her first name was Maria, and that she was given away as a 1-year-old as her mother fled a violent relationship.

Adriana was on the Brazilian radio station Radio Globo and its show The Time is Now in Sao Paulo, where they connected her with her mother via telephone.

It was when Adriana asked her mother if she had other children that she made the startling discovery. Her mother gave the name of “Leandro,” a son born two years after Adriana by another man. The radio show’s host, Ron Margrini, asked Leandro, Adriana's husband who was also looking for his birth-mother, what his last name was.

Leandro, 37, turns out to be Adriana’s half-brother. He was also given up as a child. 

"I don't believe that you're telling me this. Leandro is my husband," Adriana said to her mother. 

After she calmed down from her shock, Adriana confessed that she was fearful of this happening because “Maria” appeared as the birth-mother on one of his two birth certificates.

"Now I'm scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn't want me anymore. I love him so much," Adriana said on air. 

Adriana told Radio Globo that she began her search to erase the doubts that she may have married her relative. It turns out, in fact, that they share a surname – Maria’s.

The couple began their relationship 10 years ago, have been married for seven years and a 6-year-old daughter together. The last names of the couple have been withheld to protect the privacy of their child and their own identities. 

A few days after their initial interview, Adriana and Leandro were interviewed again by Radio Globo, stating that they were still “shaken” by the discovery, but were still committed to their family and relationship and would remain together.

According to Radio Globo, under Brazilian law, their marriage is void because it was not notarized by the government nor was it conducted religiously.
