GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Generous, caring and dedicated. Those are among the words friends used to describe 72-year-old Jesse Richmond, Jr.
The longtime owner of Richmond Funeral Homes died this past Saturday. Those who loved him celebrated his life on Thursday.
Richmond enjoyed celebrating life. Following his hour long funeral service, family and friends honored his request with a second line funeral procession.
"Mr. Richmond was a giving, caring man who was an innovator. Leader in the funeral service community and had a lot of people turn out from all over to share in that," said the Rev. Rick August, who served as a funeral home apprentice under Richmond before eventually buying the business from his mentor.
He was the longtime owner of Richmond Funeral Homes. His success as a business man was a reflection of his caring spirit within the community.
"I think he'll be remembered as a hard working innovator who was committed to helping bring about change. He ran at one time for city council in the City of Biloxi. He was not successful in that run, but it just showed what his heart was about, to be invested in his community to try to see change," August recalled.
That explains why it wasn't much to ask for family and friends to endure the heat of this August afternoon, second lining down Old Pass Road; proclaiming their love for one special man and celebrating his passage into enjoying eternal life.
"In church today, there were people in their 80s all the way down to people in their 20s who had been impacted by his life," said August.
Richmond made a difference during his 72 years on this earth.
"He was a man of great influence for generations," said August.
Richmond was raised by his grandparents in Jefferson Davis County. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Richmond, along with a host of other family members and friends.
