SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A Springfield man who allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend fled from police and assaulted an officer when he attempted to handcuff him.

Police responded to Quebec Street in Indian Orchard Tuesday in an attempt to serve a restraining order against 27-year-old Luis Ortiz, but he was not there. Officers were called back to the same residence about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday for a domestic disturbance, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

Ortiz allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's house before police arrived on scene, Delaney said.

Officers had Ortiz's picture and knew who he was when they reached the house the second time. Upon arrival they saw the female caller standing next to Ortiz, who told police he was the victim's uncle, Delaney said.

"The cops were not buying his story because of their prior investigation," Delaney said, adding that Ortiz fled as soon as officers approached him to place him under arrest.

Police chased Ortiz across Main Street, over fences and into a wooded area where he was eventually apprehended, Delaney said.

Police charged Ortiz, of 1468 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield, with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, assault and battery (domestic), breaking and entering, and malicious damage to property, according to an arrest report.

Ortiz was held overnight pending his arraignment in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
