Police: heroin dealer busted on baseball diamond

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

An alleged heroin dealer who set up shop at a playground in the city's South End neighborhood is facing charges after he unsuccessfully attempted ditch his stash as he led police on a foot chase.

Police arrested 46-year-old Carlos Leon around 4 p.m. Tuesday after witnessing him sell drugs to customers at the Emerson Wight Playground on Marble Street, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

"Residents that live in the area and have small children who play at this gorgeous park in the city were fed up with the actions of this subject dealing death," Delaney said.

After receiving complaints, police set up an undercover surveillance operation on the park and witnessed Leon set up shop near the baseball diamond and hide his drugs near home plate. Leon would ride a small BMX bicycle around the park and sell heroin to customers who approached him, Delaney said.

When officers converged on the park Leon spotted them and a foot chase ensured. Police chased him through the park and into the adjacent neighborhood on Adams Street, Delaney said.

Leon then ran up a fire escape and onto a roof in order to avoid being caught. That's where he discarded his heroin supply, Delaney said.

Springfield police detectives were able to catch Leon and recover 53 bags of heroin and an unspecified amount of cash, Delaney said.

Police charged Leon, of 103 Pearl St., Springfield, with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, violation of a drug-free park zone and resisting arrest, according to an arrest report.

Leon is scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
