BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A driver who led police on a high speed chase Monday night faces several charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, according to authorities.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported Damiene Lewis, 36, of Baton Rouge, is accused of multiple traffic violations and trying to run over detectives as he tried to flee. Police added drugs were found in his vehicle.

Lewis was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the following charges:

Attempted murder of a police officer
Aggravated flight from officers
Careless operation
Failure to signal
Possession of hydrocodone

According to the probable cause report, patrol officers spotted a white Porsche Cayenne believed to be speeding while swerving around cars on Evangeline Street near Scenic Highway around 10:30 p.m. Police said the SUV was pulled over around Scenic and Hollywood Street, but when officers approached the window, the driver sped off through the red light at the intersection.

Detectives reported they gave chase and watched as the SUV swerved into oncoming traffic and sped through stop signs. They added the driver finally stopped, but then sped off again in the direction of a group of officers, which reportedly forced the detectives to jump out of the way so they wouldn’t get run over.

Authorities said the driver continued to flee and stopped again in the driveway of a home on 71st Street. Officers said they had to pull Lewis out of the vehicle because he allegedly would not get out when told to. They added he continued to resist until they put handcuffs on him. Investigators said there was hydrocodone on the floor of the vehicle in plain view.

Officials reported Lewis has a long rap sheet that includes drug arrests, gun charges and multiple counts of resisting officers.

He was arrested on July 15 on charges of possession with intent to distribute, resisting an officer, obstruction of justice, battery of a police officer and loud noise from a vehicle. He was released on July 29 on a $20,000.

Mississippi’s giant house party might not have the fanfare of 2016. But, it’s still a must visit event for families across the magnolia state. This year is not a political year in Mississippi. So, the political stumping is not nearly as significant as it can be. Yet, this Wednesday and Thursday, people will gather under the pavilion at Founders Square and listen to a series of speeches from Mississippi’s elected leaders.
