An inmate at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville is dead after being stabbed by a fellow inmate on Saturday. Officials with MDOC said Merlin Littleton was pronounced dead at the prison infirmary shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Officials said Terrance Bridges was identified by prison officials as the attacker and is being questioned by investigators.

"An initial investigation revealed policy and procedure were not followed," MDOC Commissioner Christopher B. Epps said. "We will take the necessary disciplinary action upon completion of our investigation."

Authorities said Bridges, 24, is serving a 10 year sentence for aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Officials say Bridges has received 10 disciplinary actions since he has been incarcerated.

Littleton, 37, was serving a 30 year sentence for two convictions of armed robbery.

"What charges will be filed depends on the outcome of the investigation," CID Director Sean K. Smith said.
