MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is the first law enforcement agency in the state to launch a high-tech video surveillance system that is improving response times and helping administrators make decisions without even going to the scene.

You may remember a wild police chase through three counties in 2012.

Montgomery County Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham sure remembers because his deputies assisted and their office lost communication with them.

"We lost radio traffic and we didn't know where our car was because we had got outside of our radio zone. So now with this we will be able to see where he's going from the office from my iPhone, from my iPad. I can be able to dial in and pull up any car and see where that car is and watch the deputy as he or she is driving down the road. You can actually watch them on the map and follow them on the map," Cunningham said.

Cunningham says it's a technology called Patrol Scout that costs about $25,000 and was installed in 25 patrol cars this week. Next year, 25 more patrol cars will have the feature.

"We're not out there on the scene. We are right here and we are able to make calls. 'Hey look, this guy is driving crazy. Let's pull this off. We don't want to continue this.' And that's what's so good, for administrators to make command decisions from anywhere," Cunningham said.

Cunningham said installation of this new technology should be complete in all 25 patrol units by next week.
