BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A new school year is just around the corner. The Hope Community Development Agency summer camp in Biloxi wrapped up Friday afternoon, and they celebrated with a big back to school bash, with water fun, games and barbecue.
Demico Davis will begin his senior year at D'Iberville High in less than a week. He's been a summer intern with Hope CDA and coordinated the fun event for the children in the summer camp program.
"I'm getting the things out of my summer that I prayed for and I asked for when I first came here," Davis said.
By working with children for the past two months, Davis says he's walking away with some of the skills he needs to be a leader.
"It means a big deal to me because me going back to school, I can take out of this being a better leader. That I'm a true leader. And then they gave me better skills that I can take. Like I can now put on my resume event planner, so that's good," Davis said.
Gabriella McCovery is an 11th grader from Harrison Central. She is also an intern with Hope CDA and contributed to the summer bash by organizing a balloon release for all the children who've lost their lives this year due to violence.
"It came in remembrance of all the youth. Nobody in particular, but all the youth around the coast that have died. We're just going to have a moment of silence and release the balloons," McCovery said.
As they pause to remember those lost, both children and organizers are also looking forward to the year ahead.
"I'm looking forward to next year and we will continue to keep building community. Keep making this area stronger, better and a place you would want to live," Executive Director of Hope CDA, Bill Stallworth said.
This is the fifth year Hope Community Development Agency has held its summer program, but the first year they've done a special balloon release.
