Calhoun County deputies are preparing to go back to school, except, they're practicing something they hope they never have to do.
On Thursday, deputies - from school resource officers to Sheriff Larry Amerson himself - spent the day practicing how to clear a building of a gunman.
Their practice took place at Alexandria High School while school staff were doing their own back to school preparations.
Amerson says he took part in the drills because in an actual emergency, everyone from the whole department would be called out to the scene.
He says school shooting scenarios are never far from the minds of his deputies as they often pop up in the headlines.
