WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) – The Senate passed a highway bill that will keep highway construction going – for now.

The 81 to 13 vote gives congressional approval to pump $11 billion into the Highway Trust Fund. The fund helps pay for road and bridge projects across the country.

On Thursday, the Senate vote was cutting close to the Friday deadline when state officials said they’d have to freeze or cancel hundreds of construction projects.

This measure keeps the fund going until next May.

The bill is now headed to President Barack Obama’s desk.
