WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - The words "Lights, Cameras, Action" will soon be heard in the City of Waveland. A Hollywood film maker is in the process of opening a movie studio in the city. The hope is to lure Tinseltown to the Coast.
The equipment to make a movie is already on the grounds of Waveland Studios. Make-up trailers, production trucks, camera cranes, and a camera car can all be found there. Owner Jack Prince said the camera car is the only one of its kind in Mississippi.
"You call it a car, but technically it's a truck. You just rig cameras, lights on the front, the back or top for free riding leading or following stunts or action," explained Prince.
Prince said he's been part of the film production industry for more than 20 years and has had a hand in hundreds movies and TV shows. He made a decision to open his own studio in Waveland for two reasons.
"The film friendly environment, everybody wants it. And this building, the availability of this building. I was searching Gulfport and all over the area and just landed on this building," said Prince.
That building is a former skating rink just off of Highway 90.
"We have a shop in the back. We have a 25,000 square foot studio to film in. The shop in the back, we use special effects, mechanical effects."
Prince said his studio will officially open in about a month, but already has productions ready to go.
"We will be building sets in here in August for a show that's going to start filming at the end of September/first of October. Then there's another that wants to start prepping during that show. So it seems to be taking off pretty quickly."
He said he wasn't at liberty to release specific details about the show at this time.
"I can't do show titles yet or actor names yet because they haven't done their press release yet, so I've got to keep it zipped."
Waveland Studios will employ about eight people. But Prince said when movie productions are underway, there could be as many as 200 people in and out of the facility, which will mean an economic boost for the community.
