BIRMINGHAM , AL (WAFF) - A team of students working down at The University of Alabama in Birmingham could protect you from the next big computer hack.

UAB has actually had a reputation for its cyber security expertise for a number of years.

One of the bigger examples was in 2010 when it helped Facebook identify some hackers that launched an attack.

Facebook took those hackers to court, won a settlement and they gave UAB $250,000. So, UAB created a Facebook Suite.

It really looks like something out of Silicon Valley.

The open space allows students and their advisors a place to plug in and share ideas

While the students are only just students right now, the ideas they have and the material they learn in this suite could one day solve the next hack attack.

"They're getting the experience they need to get plugged into that whole cyber security realm and maybe go work for Facebook," Director of UAB's "The Center" Dr. John Sloan said. "So we have folks that are working on developing new tools. We also have folks who are taking existing tools and then applying them in innovative ways to address cybersecurity issues."

Some of The Center's work has already paid off.

Some students have already started a cyber security firm at Innovative Depot down in Birmingham.
