The Montgomery Police Department held a graduation Tuesday night for the members of the 2014 Citizens' Police Academy.

The police department's eighth Citizens' Police Academy class is made up of 21 Montgomery residents, including WSFA 12 News' Digital Content Producer Morgan Carlson.

Members successfully completed a 10-week curriculum and more than 30 hours of instruction provided by MPD staff. Members learned about all aspects of the police department's mission and operations.

Curriculum included the history of the department, different types of investigations and visits from the SWAT team, bomb squad, K-9 officers, motorcycle officers and more. Participants also got to see police work firsthand by riding along with patrol officers.

The Citizens' Police Academy is part of the police department's Community Oriented Policing Bureau. Also included in this bureau are the police department's Volunteers in Police Service or VIPS.

VIPS volunteers assist the police department in many areas and help free up officers in a number of areas. They work at the reception desk, assist school crossing officers, do home checks for Montgomery residents who are on vacation and do neighborhood patrols.

If you'd like to learn more about the Citizens' Police Academy or the VIPS program, call MPD's Community Oriented Policing Bureau at 334-240-4800 or email Sgt. Walker at nwalker@montgomeryal.gov.
