Coroner identifies suspect found dead in Tchoutacabouffa River

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove has identified the man who died after fleeing into the Tchoutacabouffa River in an attempt to elude police on Saturday as 21-year-old James Dwight King, of D'Iberville. He said recovery crews pulled King's body from the river at 2:32 p.m. on Sunday.

D'Iberville Deputy Police Chief Clay Jones said police were attempting to make a routine traffic stop on Saturday when King took off, leading police on a vehicle chase. Authorities said King abandoned his car and jumped into the river from Lamey Bridge Road.

Police believe King fled because he had several outstanding warrants for traffic violations.

Officials said they urged King to return to shore and one officer shed his gear and went in after him. Jones said King began to struggle and went under the water. He was not seen again until recovery crews found his body on Sunday.

Hargrove said the cause of death will be determined in an autopsy that will be performed on Monday.
