HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A man is recovering from surgery after being shot in his car in Huntsville. The man drove a short distance away from the scene, even after being hit.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. Sunday at Seminole Drive and Vernon Avenue. Police collected about a dozen shell casings from the scene.

After being shot, police said the victim continued to drive himself away from the scene, to the 600 block of Clinton Avenue. The car struck a building about 100 feet from where the vehicle finally came to rest.

The victim's car had several bullet holes in the driver's side door and at least one in the windshield.

The 20-year-old shooting victim was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital. Police said he had a life-threatening wound to the stomach. He underwent surgery shortly after arriving at Huntsville Hospital.

Officials said he came out of surgery Sunday evening, but remains in critical condition.

Donna Allen lives close to Seminole, the initial crime scene. She said this kind of violence is not uncommon in the neighborhood. She feels she must do something to protect herself and her children, starting with a petition to stop the violence.

"It was just terrifying," Allen said. "I'm not safe with my child playing out there because every night I am hearing gunshots; every day I am hearing gunshots."

No arrests have been made. If you have information about the shooting, you are asked to contact the Huntsville Police Department.
