Shoppers take advantage of sales tax free weekend

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

For some retailers this is their biggest weekend after Thanksgiving.  Friday was day one of the two day Mississippi tax free holiday.

That means Friday and Saturday you can buy certain items, like clothes and shoes that are under $100 without paying sales tax.

And if that's not enough incentive some stores are offering even deeper discounts to draw in customers.

This is back to school time and whether you have children in school or not, retailers are offering steep discounts to coincide with the sales tax holiday. It's an effort to attract you to the registers.

"Compared to last year's Friday for tax free, we're running about a 20 percent increase. So we're excited to see the traffic in here," said Toby Kelly the JC Penney Store Manager.

In addition, to the tax holiday Kelly says his store is also offering discounts on top of already marked down items. Dwayne Lyons says he's taking advantage of the sales so much he's out-shopped his wife.

"I went to JCPenneys and JCPenneys had underwear, but one pack at regular price and the second pack at half off and plus an extra 20 percent off and tax free so that was excellent," said Lyons.

Lyons wasn't doing any back to school shopping, however, many of the shoppers at the mall were. They say it's important to head back to school without breaking the bank.

"Well, when you're shopping for school clothes and you're helping your grandchildren. It's just nice to be able to get some good bargains," said Ann Breland.

"You definitely get a decrease on how much normally school clothes would be," said Bailey Westhoff.

For the students heading back to school, it's a must to head into a new classroom with an up-to-date wardrobe.

"You'll be looking like last year. Like the clothes you had for last year you'll still have for this year and you want new clothes for this year," said Cylliah Cochran.

"It's all about the economics. You know what I mean? The more you save, the more you have to spend," said Lyons.

Mississippi's tax free holiday ends Saturday at midnight.

Remember school supplies, computers, athletic or recreational activity are not included in the sales tax free weekend.
