OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - One of the most iconic businesses in downtown Ocean Springs is about to undergo a big change. Lovelace Drug Store, as it exists today, will close at the end of the month.
While the building, antiques, and soda fountain are all locally owned, the pharmaceutical business is owned by Freds Inc. Or at least it was until Freds recently sold it to CVS. Because of that, the prescriptions and all related business is being transferred to the CVS pharmacy just down the road on Bienville Boulevard.
Customers who went to Lovelace for their prescriptions will be able to get the same service at the newer CVS location. But for many in Ocean Springs, Lovelace Drugs is more than just a pharmacy. It's a landmark. It's a memory. It's pure Ocean Springs.
The building was constructed in 1926; Lovelace moved in around the 1950s, and still proudly boasts that Elvis Presley once shopped there. That feeling of a simpler time is what appeals to so many people.
"Just every time you go in there you feel like you're back in small town America," said Alex Gresham who works next door to the store. "I would go to Lovelace for quick prescription refills. They also have that really good lunch counter to go grab a turkey sandwich and quick milkshakes."
"I think I was about seven the first time I went in there and they had the same little bar," Ocean Springs resident Eunice Tambah remembered. "They had bar stools. And it was nice."
That bar and all the equipment inside the building will remain. But it's not clear what the future holds for the spot where Lovelace sits.
Again, Lovelace Drug Store's last day of operation will be July 31. Beginning August 1, all prescriptions will be available at CVS pharmacy and customers of Lovelace won't have to take any action.
