GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A man who was arrested last week for burglary is now charged with the capital murder of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. Alberto Garcia has been in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center since last Friday, and will continue to be held without bond.
Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said one week ago, Janaya was brought to Whitney Drive where she was sexually assaulted and strangled. Her body was found the next morning inside an abandoned trailer. Papania said Garcia lived at The Palms apartments where Janaya was last seen. He called the little girl's tragic death "a crime of opportunity."
The chief said Julian Gray, who was also arrested last week, remains a person of interest. Papania said evidence collected at the scene of the crime must still be analyzed, and could result in more charges.
Chief Papania said just before announcing the new charges to the public, he met with Janaya's parents to update them on the work of his investigators.
"Justice for Janaya remains of utmost importance," Chief Papania said.
