Brown is first African American woman to sit on Mississippi federal bench

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

History in the state where the first African American woman holds a seat on the U.S. District Court. Investiture for United States District Judge Debra M. Brown was held Sunday in Greenville.

The Yazoo native's took the oath at the Washington County Convention Center. In May of 20-13 President Barack Obama nominated her for the post.

Judge Brown is a University of Mississippi Law School graduate and former Jackson attorney. Brown, who also holds a degree in architecture from Mississippi State University, was confirmed unanimously by the Senate.

The 50 year old will preside in the Northern District of Mississippi at the U.S. Courthouse in Greenville. Brown was nominated after the death of U. S. District Judge W. Allen Pepper Jr. in 20-12.
