BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Although Biloxi city leaders have been facing budgeting woes, the financial situation may be getting better very soon.
"We've got everything that people would want. The one thing we were missing was a professional sport," Greg Iverson said.
Getting a pro baseball team to downtown Biloxi has been both a treat and a headache. With recent budgeting issues, some city leaders and baseball lovers were getting a bit worried. Some were wondering if Biloxi would have a stadium built in time for the team's 2015 spring season.
"Everyone gets weary when you start spending millions of dollars on a publicly funded program, but at the end of the day, it gets done. It gets done because it has to get done. I think they expected that. You know, we can talk about delays, but it will happen. It's going to be built and it's going to be a very, very nice addition to the city of Biloxi," Troy Trettel said.
After city council members met to figure out what stadium amenities could be cut to bring the bidding budget down, they were able to bring a $32.3 million ballpark down to a $29 million project.
Chief Administrative Officer David Nichols says those cut backs won't be anything that will take away from a fan's baseball experience.
"There was some water proofing on the top deck to prevent the water from getting below, some extra coating on some of the paint, and we're just going to go with a standard paint. Things like that," Nichols said. "We still have some ways to go on funding some additional items, but this gets the bulk of the work done for the next phase of the stadium."
Although city officials have been facing budget hiccups, they say that they're going to continue to do what they can to make sure Biloxi sees that baseball stadium in 2015.
"Well, I'm very excited. I think it's time we keep going and get this on a record and play ball," Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway said.
The new budget will be presented to the city council on Tuesday to get a final approval from council members. Nichols says after the new contract gets approval, it will take two weeks or less to get a notice to proceed with construction.
