GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi coroner has ruled strangulation as the cause of death for a 5-year-old girl whose body was found in an abandoned trailer in Gulfport.
Janaya (juh-NAY-uh) Thompson was last seen by her family Wednesday night outside their apartment. A search dog helped locate her body Thursday morning in a trailer near the apartment complex.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove announced the cause of death early Friday, saying the child died of "asphyxiation due to strangulation."
Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania says two men are being questioned as "persons of interest" in the capital murder investigation, but neither has been charged in the child's death.
The girl lived near the elementary school where she was to start kindergarten in a few weeks.
