Ocean Springs schools hire police chief

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Constable Kerry Fountain has been hired as Ocean Springs' schools chief of police.

Schools Superintendent Bonita Coleman-Potter says school districts must maintain a commissioned police force in order to have armed officers on campus.

Coleman-Potter tells The Mississippi Press reports (http://bit.ly/1soWPl6 ) the desire to have armed officers on campus is not a reflection of any problems within the schools, but simply a need to be prepared.

Coleman-Potter says Fountain will be able to "hold dual commissions" and not give up his post as constable. He will earn an annual salary of $54,950 from the school district.

Fountain is one of four constables in Jackson County. He starts work with the school district on Monday.

Before becoming constable, Fountain worked 10 years on the Biloxi police force.
