Hinds County takes a big step to make schools safer

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Byram police and Hinds County schools are partnering together to give kids a safer environment to learn.

They created a new position called a School Resource Officer or SRO. The SROs will be placed in three schools.

Starting in the fall, Gary Road Elementary and Intermediate schools and Byram Middle School will have resource officers stationed in their buildings.

Providing security for the kids is a big part of their job description, but it goes a lot farther then that.

School administrators hope these officers will teach the kids about drug and gang awareness and become positive role models and mentors for them.

They believe the daily interaction with the kids will form relationships, hopefully strengthening the community in the long run.

"This has the potential to create new and further improve existing community relationships with the police department for years to come, even generations," says Police Chief Luke Thompson.

School resource officers will be at "Meet the Teacher Day" in a few weeks on August 5.
